EMPOWERING WOMEN IN TRUCKING

Empowering Women in Trucking: The Inspiring Journey of Girl Torque

In the vast expanse of the transport industry, where roaring engines and long highways dominate the landscape, a group of determined women is rewriting the narrative. This is the story of Girl Torque, a movement born out of resilience, camaraderie, and a drive to challenge stereotypes.

It all began in the scorching summer of 2021 when Karen Sutherland, a seasoned trucker with years of experience in the haulage industry, decided that it was time to shine a light on the often-overlooked contributions of women in this male-dominated field. Drawing inspiration from the strong and inspiring women she had encountered throughout her journey, Karen envisioned a platform that would not only celebrate their hard work but also give back to the community.

With this vision in mind, Karen reached out to her fellow female truckers and formed a tight-knit group. Together, they created a messenger group, selected charities close to their hearts, and embarked on a journey that would soon capture the attention and admiration of many.

Their first endeavor was the creation of a calendar that featured captivating photos of themselves in action, showcasing the grit and determination required to thrive in the world of transport. Karen took charge of distributing the first 1000 copies far and wide, while online sales were skillfully managed by two members of the group.

What started as a humble initiative quickly gained traction, with demand soaring and another 1000 calendars flying off the virtual shelves. By January, their efforts had raised an astounding £25,500 for six deserving charities. Buoyed by this success and fueled by their shared passion, the group made a pivotal decision—to transform Girl Torque from a passion project into a full-fledged business with a mission.

Their mission was twofold: to normalize and promote the presence of hardworking women in the transport industry and to continue their philanthropic endeavors by supporting charitable causes. With unwavering determination, Girl Torque set their sights on obtaining official charity status for their organization, a testament to their commitment to making a lasting impact.

Fast forward to 2023, and Girl Torque had not only achieved charity status but had also surpassed all expectations. Through relentless dedication and the support of their growing community, they raised an impressive £40,000, a testament to the power of collective action and shared purpose.

With joy and pride, Girl Torque presented four £10,000 cheques to their supported charities: Mind Mental Health, Maggies Cancer Support, The Dogs Trust, and The Alzheimer’s Society. This brought their total contributions to a remarkable £65,500 in just two years—a testament to the transformative power of unity and determination.

As we eagerly await what the future holds for Girl Torque in 2024 and beyond, one thing is certain: their story is a testament to the resilience, strength, and unwavering spirit of women in the transport industry. They have not only shattered stereotypes but also paved the way for a more inclusive and compassionate future, where hard work, dedication, and kindness reign supreme.
