Discovering Degas: A Glance into William Burrell's Artistic World

The art world is buzzing with excitement as The Burrell Collection prepares to unveil a spectacular exhibition showcasing Sir William Burrell’s complete collection of prized works by the renowned artist Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Opening on Friday, May 24, 2024, "Discovering Degas: Collecting in the Time of William Burrell" promises an unparalleled experience for art enthusiasts and historians alike.

For the first time ever, visitors will have the opportunity to marvel at all 23 Degas works from Burrell's original collection displayed together in one captivating space. Among these treasures is a piece from Berwick Museum and Art Gallery, adding a unique touch to the collection.

What makes this exhibition even more extraordinary is the addition of around 30 exceptional paintings, works on paper, and sculptures loaned from esteemed national and international collections. This blend of Burrell's collection with loans from renowned institutions like The Courtauld, National Museums Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, and Musée d’Orsay, Paris, promises a rich and diverse artistic experience.

The loans for this exhibition are made possible by the Weston Loan Programme with Art Fund, a pioneering initiative supporting smaller museums to borrow significant works from national collections. This collaboration underscores the importance of accessibility and inclusivity in sharing art with communities worldwide.

Pippa Stephenson-Sit, Curator of European Art at The Burrell, expresses her excitement about the exhibition, highlighting its role in offering fresh perspectives on a beloved art movement. The exhibition not only celebrates Degas's masterful techniques but also delves into the history of how these works found their way into Burrell's collection.

Professor Frances Fowle, Senior Trustee of the Burrell Collection, sheds light on the fascinating journey of collecting Degas artworks by Sir William and Lady Burrell. Through letters and archival materials, visitors will gain insight into the couple's passion for art and their significant contributions to the cultural landscape of Glasgow.

"Discovering Degas" isn't just about admiring artworks; it's about understanding the artistic vision, the collector's passion, and the historical context that shaped these masterpieces. The accompanying publication, public program, and symposium further enrich the experience, offering deeper insights into Degas's legacy and his impact on British art collectors.

This exhibition marks another milestone for The Burrell Collection, following its acclaimed reopening in 2022. With a focus on community engagement, digital interpretation, accessibility, inclusiveness, and sustainability, The Burrell continues to set benchmarks in the museum world.

As the anticipation builds, art enthusiasts are encouraged to secure their tickets early for "Discovering Degas: Collecting in the Time of William Burrell," a journey through art, history, and the enduring passion for creativity.
